The LICEO CLASSICO "MARCO TERENZIO VARRONE" of RIETI, the FONDAZIONE VARRONE and the ASSOCIAZIONE EX ALUNNI of LICEO CLASSICO, call the

8TH CERTAMEN VARRONIANUM REATINUM
RIETI 15-16-17 April 2010

reserved for students attending the second last and the last year of senior high school specializing in classical studies (Liceo Classico), senior high school specializing in science education (Liceo Scientifico), senior high school specializing in modern languages and science of education (Liceo Pedagogico-Linguistico), senior high school specializing in technical education (Liceo Tecnologico) and agriculture (Istituti Tecnici e Professionali per l’Agricoltura), and to high school students, from UE countries, in which Latin is studied.
The Certamen is dedicated to the memory of Professor Monsignor Benedetto Riposati, Professor of Latin Literature at Università Cattolica in Milan, former teacher at Liceo Classico of Rieti and eminent Varro scholar.
The Certamen is structured in two main sections:
1. Classical section, reserved to students attending the second last and the last year of senior high schools specializing in classical studies, such as Licei Classici, Scientifici, Pedagogici, Linguistici. It is required a translation from Latin of a text taken from Varro or from a different author of scientific prose (Seneca "Naturales quaestiones", Columella "De re rustica", Pliny the Elder "Naturalis historia"). The translation must be followed by a short commentary, in Italian, about the linguistic, stylistic, and historical-literary features of the text. The translation is reserved to no more than 10 students – including students from EU countries where Latin is studied. These students will have the possibility of writing the translation and the commentary in English, or French, or German, or Spanish or Italian.
2. Technical and scientific section including two distinct subsections (historical-literary and technical-practical). For each of them it is required a research on:
a) historical-literary research on "Strustural aspects, contents, Greek models and Roman developments of Saturae Menippeae by Varro", reserved for Italian students attending the second last and the last year of senior high schools specializing in classical studies, in science education, in modern languages and science of education and for no more than 10 students, EU citizens. Foreign students can use the languages of point 1.
N.B.: The texts you can refer to (in the languages above mentioned) for the historical-literary research of technical-scientific section are:
Varro, about 600 fragments of Saturae Menippee (because of the difficulty of finding popular editions, the students can read and analyse these texts as they appear in the school editions)
- Seneca, Apokolokyntosis
- Petronius, Satyricon
Other sources of research can be: Marziano Capella, De nuptiis Mercurii et Philologiae; Boethius, De consolatione philosophiae; Dante, Vita nova. The students can refer to any text about the proposed theme and enrich their research with personal observations and examples.
b) technical and practical research on "Fruit trees: harvesting, conservation, use of the products in the Roman world and in the modern agriculture", reserved for students attending national senior high schools specializing in technical and vocational education for agriculture and Technological Liceo , and for no more than 10 students, EU citizens. Foreign students can use the languages mentioned in point 1 and 2a.

The partecipation to Technical and Science Section, subsections a) and b), requires a research, done in the respective schools, which makes use of paratextual features: paper, technological, iconographic, plastic devices, etc.
The applications for all sections must be sent in and not later than March 15, 2010.
The researches of technical-scientific section, subsections a) and b), must be sent in and not later than March 25, 2010.
Enclosures A and B of this announcement, filled in completely, must be sent to the address at the bottom of this document within the fixed terms.
Schools interested in the classical section can take part with no more than two students, accompanied by a teacher if underage.
For organization reasons the number of Italian competitors must be limited to no more than 80, for the admission we will take into account the receipt date of the applications.
The students will be hosted at the expenses of the organizing Committee; the associate teachers will have full board at one of the local hotels and 30% of their expenses will be refunded by the organizing committee upon relevant documentation. Travel costs are chargeable to students and associate teachers.
The 8th Certamen Varronianum will take place on April 15-16-17, 2010; the list of the elegible candidates will be available soon after the closing dates on the school website: www.liceoclassicovarronerieti.it. Since February you can learn the constitution of the committees, the programme of the contest and the ways of execution of classical section competition.
Certamen regulations are enclosed.
The amount of the prizes is the following:

1) for the classical section:
• 1st prize  € 1.600
• 2nd prize € 1.200
• 3rd prize  €    700

Books and study materials for students classified from fourth to tenth

2) for the technical-scientific section, historical-literary subsection:
• 1st prize  € 500
• 2nd prize € 400
• 3rd prize  € 300


3) for the technical-scientific section, technical-practical subsection:
• 1st prize  € 500
• 2nd prize € 400
• 3rd prize  € 300


The EU competitors will be included in the same list of the Italian schools.

REGULATIONS

Art. 1 The Liceo Classico "Marco Terenzio Varrone" of Rieti, the Fondazione Varrone – Cassa di Risparmio of Rieti, and the Associazione ex-alunni of Liceo Classico announce every year the Certamen Varronianum, classical section, in April or in May. It is reserved for students attending the second last and the last year of national Licei Classici, Scientifici and Pedagogico-linguistici and for no more than ten competitors coming from EU schools where they study Latin. The Certamen Varronianum Reatinum, classical section, consists of a translation of a Latin passage from Varro or from different authors of scientific prose. The translation must be followed by a brief commentary in Italian.

Art. 2 The Classical section examining board is formed by an Italian University Professor of Latin Literature, who acts as President; by two teachers (university or high school) whose appointment, by the President of the examining board, is unchallengeable; by the School Headmaster and by the President of the ex-students association, in agreement with the organizing Committee.

Art. 3 No more than two students for each joining school will gain entrance. They have to be accompanied by a teacher or by their Headmaster. The students that did not classify among the first ten, at the previous edition, may participate to the present one. The students will be hosted at the expenses of the organizing Committee; the associate teachers will have full board at one of the local hotels and 30% of their expenses will be refunded by the organizing committee upon relevant documentation. Travel costs are chargeable to students and associate teachers.

Art. 4 The commission, after examining the works and selecting the best, will prepare the list of the winners of the Certamen, classical section, who will be awarded on their third-day stay as following:
- cash prize to students classified as the best three
- books and study materials to students classified from fourth to
  tenth
- certificates to all participants and their schools.
A unique list will be drawn up for both Italian and foreign students.

Art. 5 At the same time as the Certamen, classical section, the Certamen, technical-scientific section, will take place, reserved for students of the last two classes of classical, scientific, technical, educational, vocational schools for agriculture and national technological ones. This section is divided into two subsections: historical-literary and technical-practical. Each school can take part in the Certamen with no more than two either individual or group works, whose theme will be announced in the annual call. Even the students who were present in the previous contest and did not classify within the first ten can participate. No more than twenty students (ten for each of the two subsections) coming from EU schools, will be admitted to this section.

Art. 6 The Technical and Science section examining board is formed by one University Professor and by two high school teachers, one specialized in scientific and technological field, the other in vocational field. They will examine all the projects forwarded to us not beyond the deadline, they will declare the winners whose names will be sent to their schools. The deadline will be communicated in the annual announcement.

Art. 7 The winners of the two subsections will be awarded as following:
- cash prize to students classified as the best three
- books and study materials to students classified from fourth to
  tenth
- certificates to all participants and to all joining schools.
EU students will be rewarded as fixed in article 4.
Prize-giving for Technical and Science section winners will be held during the final day of "Certamen - Classical section" that takes place every year in April or May. The winners classified as the first three of both sections will be hosted in the occasion of the price-giving ceremony at the expenses of the organizing Committee, since the day before.

Art. 8 During the stay in Rieti, cultural, entertaining, sightseeing activities will be organized for all participants.

Art. 9 The Certamen is organized by an organizing Committee called "Comitato Varroniano", composed of:

1) The Headmaster pro-tempore of the Liceo Classico
2) The President pro-tempore of "Fondazione Varrone Cassa di
     Risparmio di Rieti"
3) The President pro-tempore of the "Associazione ex alunni del
     Liceo Classico"
4) A member of the direction of "Fondazione Varrone Cassa di
     Risparmio di Rieti"
5) A member of the direction of the "Associazione ex alunni del
     Liceo classico"
6) A member of Comune di Rieti
7) A member of Provincia di Rieti
8) A member of Regione Lazio

The Committee decides every year the times and the rules of the Certamen Varronianum and everything concerns its realization.
